Keep Your Drawings Consistent with AutoCAD CAD Standards

Consistency is one of the foundations of good CAD management. Whether you're working independently or collaborating across a large design team, maintaining drawing standards helps improve quality, reduce errors and make projects easier to manage. 

AutoCAD includes a powerful but often overlooked CAD Standards tool that allows you to compare drawings against your company standards, identify inconsistencies and even correct them automatically. 

If you're looking to improve drawing quality while reducing manual checking, here's how AutoCAD CAD Standards can help.

Why CAD Standards Matter

Without consistent standards, drawings can quickly become difficult to work with. Common issues include: 

  • Layers using incorrect colours or linetypes 
  • Multiple text or dimension styles for the same purpose 
  • Inconsistent naming conventions 
  • Drawings received from external consultants that don't match your company standards 

These inconsistencies can lead to confusion, wasted time and unnecessary rework throughout a project.

Creating Your CAD Standards File

The first step is creating a DWS (Drawing Standards) file. Many businesses already have everything they need inside their standard drawing template (DWT), including: 

  • Layers 
  • Linetypes 
  • Text styles 
  • Dimension styles 

Simply save this as a DWS file or create a dedicated standards drawing containing only your approved settings.  

If your business works across multiple disciplines, such as architecture, structural engineering or MEP, you can also create separate standards files for each team.

Attaching Standards to Your Drawings

Once your standards file has been created: 

  1. Open the Manage tab in AutoCAD. 
  2. Select Configure from the Standards panel. 
  3. Attach your DWS file. 
  4. If required, attach multiple standards files and prioritise them in the list.

The standards file remains attached to the drawing until removed, making it ideal for inclusion within your company templates 

You can also choose which elements AutoCAD should audit, including: 

  • Layers 
  • Linetypes 
  • Text Styles 
  • Dimension Styles 

This flexibility allows you to check only the standards that matter for your workflow. 

Running the Standards Check

Once configured, simply select Check Standards from the Standards panel. AutoCAD compares your drawing against the attached standards file and identifies any differences. 

For each issue, AutoCAD can: 

  • Highlight the problem 
  • Suggest the correct standard 
  • Automatically replace non-compliant items 
  • Skip or ignore specific exceptions where required 

The audit doesn't simply check object names; it also verifies their properties. 

For example: 

  • A layer with the correct name but the wrong colour can be corrected automatically. 
  • An incorrect text or dimension style can be replaced with the approved version. 
  • Redundant non-standard styles can be removed from the drawing altogether.  

This makes cleaning up drawings significantly faster than manually inspecting every object. 

Automatic Notifications

AutoCAD can also monitor drawings for standards violations while you work. 

Depending on your preferred settings, you'll receive notifications whenever a drawing contains elements that don't comply with the attached standards. 

This provides an extra level of quality control before drawings are shared with colleagues or clients.

A Practical Use for CAD Standards

Many organisations think of CAD Standards purely as an internal quality control tool, but they can also save considerable time when working with drawings received from external sources. 

Imagine receiving a package of as-built drawings from a client or consultant. The layer names, text styles and dimension styles don't match your company standards, leaving you with hours of manual cleanup before you can begin design work.  

Instead of editing everything individually, you can attach your company DWS file, run the Standards Checker and allow AutoCAD to automatically correct many of the inconsistencies. 

While some manual adjustments may still be required, this approach can dramatically reduce the amount of time spent preparing external drawings for production.
