AutoCAD Dimension Editing Guide: Tips for Accurate Dimensioning
Dimensions are one of the most important elements in any technical drawing. They communicate design intent, manufacturing requirements and construction information, so accuracy is essential.
Once dimensions have been placed, there are several ways to refine them in AutoCAD. Whether you need to reposition a dimension, adjust its appearance or add additional information, AutoCAD provides tools that make editing dimensions quick and efficient.

Edit Dimensions Using Grips

- Move extension line definition points
- Reposition the dimension line
- Move the dimension text
- Flip arrowheads when required
- Continue or create baseline dimensions directly from an existing one
For example, if a dimension has been placed too close to nearby geometry, simply drag the dimension line grip to create more space and improve readability. Likewise, if the dimension text overlaps other objects, you can reposition it using the text grip.
These simple adjustments help keep drawings clear while avoiding the need to recreate dimensions from scratch.
Move Dimension Text with a Leader
Sometimes moving the text alone isn't enough.
If there's limited space between objects, AutoCAD allows you to relocate the dimension text while automatically creating a leader back to the dimension line. After selecting the text grip, choose Move with Leader from the available grip options.
This keeps the relationship between the text and its dimension clear while improving the overall presentation of your drawing.
It's particularly useful on crowded floor plans, fabrication drawings and detailed assemblies.
Add Notes Using Text Overrides
Occasionally you'll want to add additional information alongside a dimension.
A common example is adding TYP to indicate that the same dimension applies to multiple similar objects. Rather than creating separate text objects, AutoCAD allows you to achieve this using the Text Override property.
Within the Properties palette, you'll find the Text Override field. Here you can use AutoCAD's built-in formatting codes to combine the measured value with additional notes.
For example:
<> displays the actual measured dimension.
\X creates a line break.
Any text entered after \X, such as TYP, appears beneath the dimension line.
Entering:
<>\XTYP would display the measured dimension on the first line with TYP neatly positioned below it.
This approach keeps your annotations consistent while preserving the live dimension value.
Avoid Manually Changing Dimension Values
One of the most common and potentially costly mistakes in AutoCAD is manually editing the displayed dimension text.
Although AutoCAD allows you to double-click a dimension and replace the displayed value, doing so only changes what you see on screen. The underlying geometry remains unchanged.
This creates a serious risk because:
- The displayed value no longer matches the actual model.
- Drawing errors can easily go unnoticed.
- Incorrect dimensions may be issued for manufacture or construction.
- Other team members have no obvious indication that the value has been overridden.
As a rule, never edit a dimension value simply to make it look correct.
If the measurement is wrong, the geometry or dimension placement should be corrected instead.

Check for Overridden Dimensions
If you're reviewing someone else's drawing or simply want to verify your own work; AutoCAD includes a useful command for identifying overridden dimensions.
The DIMREASSOC command scans your drawing and highlights dimensions where the displayed value no longer reflects the actual geometry.
Running this command is straightforward:
- Type DIMREASSOC.
- Select the area you want to check or simply type ALL.
- AutoCAD automatically highlights any dimensions containing overridden text.
- Complete the command to restore the correct measured values.
This makes DIMREASSOC an excellent quality-control tool before issuing drawings to clients, contractors or manufacturers.
Top Tip: Don't confuse DIMREASSOC with DIMREASSOCIATE. Despite their similar names, they perform different functions.
Best Practice for Dimension Editing
Whenever possible, dimensions should remain fully associative with the geometry they reference.

- Edit geometry rather than changing displayed values.
