In Memory of Gareth Thom

May 1, 2025 | TMS

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our Managing Director, Gareth Thom, who died on 20th April 2025.

Gareth was not only an outstanding, intelligent leader but also a beloved member of the Thom family.  A highly talented programmer with an exceptional eye for detail, Gareth brought both technical brilliance and enthusiasm to his work.

Gareth started working with the family business in 1993 at just 17 years old; firstly as work experience while on school holidays; then as a part time junior developer while studying Computer Science and Electronics at Edinburgh University; and finally as his first full time job after graduation. His programming expertise, passion and initiative were evident throughout his time at TMS and as such his progression to Software Development Manager and then to Director of Software Development were obvious steps.

Gareth led the development of a number of packages over the years; but our TMS Contract Costing package was his real passion and big success. Starting life as a fairly simple DOS application; Contract Costing has grown to be what we believe is the most feature rich costing package available today for the UK & Irish construction industry. The vision and drive behind the development – and the extreme attention to detail applied to all aspects – came from Gareth.

Whilst it’s fair to say that software development remained his true passion, in 2024, Gareth was announced as Managing Director, continuing his long-term commitment and dedication to TMS.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Gareth was known for his infectious sense of humour and deep love of life. In his years at TMS he was a brilliant colleague to many – always keen to improve both himself and others; and always taking the lead with social events – building his own ‘escape room in a box’ for colleagues to try over lunch, and regularly delivering company quizzes. Outside of work, he demonstrated the same passion & immersion as he did with his programming. He loved game nights – and built up a collection of board games that would fill most small houses; he loved real ale and craft beer – so built his own brew shed so he could perfect the craft.

We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, his friends and to all who had the privilege of working alongside him.

The funeral service will be held on Friday 23rd May at 2.30pm at Falkirk Crematorium, all who wish to pay their respects are welcome (informal attire is encouraged).  The family has requested that instead of sending any flowers, donations can be made on the day to Alloa Rugby Club, a club close to Gareth's heart.

We are committed to continuing Gareth’s legacy — enthusiasm, immense skill, consideration for others, and when the day is done, remembering to laugh and raise a glass.

May he rest in peace.

From all at TMS
